Shea + Cacao Butter Lip Balm

Making your own lip balm is not only simple and cost-effective, but it also ensures you’re using safe, clean ingredients for you and your family.
Servings: 16 tubes

Ingredients

  • 22 grams shea butter
  • 22 grams cacao butter
  • 22 jojoba oil* other options: almond, apricot, hemp, coconut
  • 22 grams beeswax

Method

Set up your water bath.
  1. Place your measured oils, butters, and other base ingredients in a small glass measuring cup or heat-safe glass container. Set the container into a small saucepan filled with about 1 inch of water.
  2. Heat over medium-low heat, allowing the ingredients to melt slowly and gently. Stir occasionally until everything is completely melted.
Add powdered ingredients, if using.
  1. If your recipe includes powdered herbs, minerals, or other powdered add-ins, add them to the melted oil mixture before adding the beeswax. Stir thoroughly until the powder is well incorporated and dissolved or evenly dispersed throughout the oil.
Optional: For an extra-smooth lip balm, carefully strain the warm oil mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining particles before continuing.
    Add the beeswax.
    1. Once any powdered ingredients have been incorporated (and strained, if desired), add the beeswax. Return the mixture to the water bath and stir until the beeswax is completely melted.
    Remove from the heat.
    1. Once everything is fully melted, carefully remove the glass measuring cup from the water bath. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
Add essential oils and other heat-sensitive ingredients.
    1. Add essential oils, flavor oils, vitamin E, or other heat-sensitive add-ins at the end. Stir well to distribute them evenly throughout the mixture.
    Pour into containers.
    1. Carefully pour the warm mixture into lip balm tubes, tins, or small round containers. A glass measuring cup with a spout makes this especially easy for small batches.
    Let the balm set.
    1. Leave the containers uncovered and undisturbed at room temperature until the balm has completely solidified. Once firm, cap the containers and store as directed by your recipe.

    Notes

β†’ For small batches, a glass measuring cup set inside a small saucepan works especially well. It provides gentle, controlled heat and makes pouring the finished balm much easier.
