A Night Cream Made the Old Way

There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing exactly what’s going on your skin — and even more satisfying when it actually works.

This waterless night cream has become one of my favorites to make and share, because it’s simple enough to put together in minutes but rich enough to rival anything you’d find on a store shelf. The base is aloe butter — a beautiful, lightweight butter made from aloe vera extract blended into coconut oil — and it gives this cream a silky, almost whipped texture that just melts into skin.

Paired with jojoba oil, which is one of the most skin-compatible oils you can use (it closely mimics your skin’s own natural sebum), this cream absorbs without feeling greasy or heavy. A small amount of castor oil adds deep conditioning, and arrowroot powder keeps the whole thing from feeling too rich — which is the secret to a butter cream that actually feels good to wear.

What makes this different from most creams you’ll find — homemade or store-bought — is what’s not in it. No water, no wax. Water shortens shelf life and requires preservatives to keep it safe; wax sits on top of skin and creates a barrier rather than absorbing into it. Without either, every single ingredient in this formula is doing something. Your skin gets pure nourishment, nothing filler.

Apply it to slightly damp skin before bed and let it work overnight. You’ll notice the difference by morning.

A couple of notes: Aloe butter can be harder to find in local stores — I usually order mine online HERE. And keep your castor oil at ½ tablespoon or less in this recipe. It’s a wonderful ingredient but a heavy one, and too much will leave the cream feeling sticky rather than silky.

Waterless Face Cream

Great for day or night wear.
Servings: 6 ounces

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup aloe butter
  • 1/2 tbsp castor oil
  • 1 1/2 tbsp jojoba oil
  • 1-2 tsp arrowroot powder optional
  • vitamin E ( a few drops to help shelf life) optional
  • essential oils (10-15 drops) optional

Method

  1. Combine the aloe butter, jojoba oil, and castor oil in a medium bowl and whip until it looks like frosting.
  2. Add in essential oils, whip again.
  3. If you are including the arrowroot powder, you will add this once it’s reached the “whipped frosting” state. The BEST way is to sift a small amount over the whipped mixture in a thin layer.
  4. Whip the arrowroot powder into the oil mixture. Start with 1 teaspoon and test on your skin. Add one more if you want it less shiny as it dries on the skin.
  5. Store in a glass container with a lid.
  6. Use within 6 months for best freshness, up to 12 months if stored cool and dry.

Notes

This is an anhydrous (water-free) whipped cream. Shelf life is determined by:
    • ingredients are fresh
    • stored cool/dark
    • handled with clean, dry hands/tools
On the castor oil
Castor is wonderful but very thick and occlusive. At ½ tbsp in this batch it’s conditioning without being heavy. More than that and the cream can feel rubbery on skin — stay at or below this amount.
On the arrowroot
Start with 1 tsp and work up to 2 tsp if needed. It takes the heavy, greasy edge off butters beautifully without reducing their moisturizing benefits — and improves how the cream glides on.
*You can use many oils in place of jojoba: almond, apricot, argan, kukui, rosehip
