In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Stir in oil (or butter) and salt. Add flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
Knead by hand 8–10 minutes (or 5–6 minutes with a mixer) until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm spot 1–1½ hours, or until doubled.
Punch down dough. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan.
Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes, until dough rises about 1 inch above the pan.
Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes, or until tops are golden brown.
Remove from pans and cool on a rack before slicing.
